S.A.T. scores nationwide have been released. Connecticut’s students score above the national average in reading and writing.

More than 80% of Connecticut’s 2008 graduating seniors took the S.A.T. test, a much higher percentage than the national average of only about half. There were slight changes in reading, writing and math scores from 2007, but on the whole state averages remained stable. Brien O’Reilly, spokesman for the College Board which produces the test, says Connecticut’s reading and writing scores are intriguing.

"For some reason, although Connecticut students are 7 points above the national average on reading which is good they’re a whopping 19 points above the national average on writing which is somewhat surprising."

O’Reilly says its usually the other way around..students generally do better in reading. Math scores in Connecticut are below the national average. The SAT is designed as a college test. Along with high school grades, colleges use SAT scores to predict an individual student’s future academic performance.
