The Connecticut National Guard is providing support to the State of Louisiana and is on alert to help out in the aftermath of Hurricane Gustav.

Governor Jodi Rell announced the State is sending 2 C-21 aircraft that can carry personnel and cargo, which could include medical supplies if needed.

Connecticut National Guard Lieutenant Colonel John Whitford said 200 soldiers and airmen are currently on Alert Status, ready to provide security and logistical support to the region.

Whitford said the Guard is currently waiting on an Emergency Management Agreement Compact  from Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal.

That launches our aircraft and personnel depending on the needs of the State of Louisiana. So it could be at anytime. But the aircraft and personnel are ready to go right now as we speak. As soon as we get the okay, then we are ready to launch.

Whitford said the Guard is also looking closely at Hurricane Hannah, which could present additional hardships to the coast.

President Bush, on Sunday, authorized federal funds for up to 50,000 National Guard troops from around the country, to help with Hurricane Gustav until September 15.

As of late yesterday, 13 thousand troops have been deployed in the Gulf region, including troops from Connecticut and Vermont.
