Governor Jodi Rell has joined forces with governors from several other states to call on Congress to renew tax provisions that promote energy efficiency and renewable fuels.
Legislation on renewing tax breaks for things like the installation of solar panels has been held up in Congress since May, with the Senate failing to take up a measure passed by the House. Many of the provisions are due to sunset before the end of this year. Â
Now members of the National Governors Association have written to lawmakers urging action on the issue. Governor Rell, one of the signatories to the letter, says as energy prices reach all time highs, families are looking for alternatives. She says renewing the tax provisions is an important step to helping individuals and businesses to reduce energy costs, improve air quality and reduce dependence on foreign oil. Â
The letter asks for legislation to extend the tax breaks for at least five years. In addition, the Governors urge Congress to develop new incentives to help families and business use energy efficient building techniques and materials, in order to help slow the growth of future energy needs.
