Rell Asks New York to Oppose Broadwater

Connecticut Gov. M. Jodi Rell is calling on New York's governor to help protect Long Island Sound from a proposed liquefied natural gas platform.

Rell, in a letter to Gov. Eliot Spitzer, says the two states should stand together against federal regulators who are clearing the way for the proposed Broadwater LNG terminal.

Earlier this month the staff of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission concluded that the project would have no major environmental impact on the region.

The FERC staff report says potential harm to the environment would be "largely limited" to the immediate vicinity of the terminal, which would be located 9 miles from Long Island and 10 miles from the Connecticut shoreline.
