Coming up, we’ll talk to two performance artists who are pushing the boundaries of gender. Peterson Toscano unearths transgender Bible characters in his upcoming play “Transfigurations” – those people who do not fit in the gender binary and who, in transgressing and transcending gender, find themselves at the center of the Bible’s most important stories. Scott Turner Schofield tells his story of gender transformation and his one-man performance “Becoming a Man in 127 Easy Steps”.

What I think is difficult for me is knowing that on the cellular level, gender is binary: xx or xy, female or male. Yet on a personal level clearly that's not the case--gender is really a continuum, a mix of male and female qualities, more of one and less of the other, related to quantities of hormones and some spiritual factor that seems more spiritual than physical--symbolized by the yin-yang symbol. With that in mind, at what point pre-surgery does a Lesbian cross over to being male? Is there a tipping point? Is it just about hormones and surgery?

It's so rare to hear about GD issues in such a balanced and understanding environment. Thanks so much for your show today, and for giving Scott and Peterson a forum to tell their own stories.
