At a time when government and business are struggling to find solutions to the nation’s problems – philanthropy is stepping in.

And the role of these grantmakers is more than just handing out money – hoping for new outcomes from the same old strategies.

A prime example is our guest today – Bob Hohler, Executive Director of the Melville Charitable Trust. He’s been chosen as the “Distinguished Grantmaker of the Year” by the Council on Foundations.

Hohler’s been instrumental in launching programs to end homelessness and make real investments in urban areas, like Hartford’s Frog Hollow neighborhood.

Today, Where We Live, Hohler talks about the role of non-profits in rebuilding communities – and how long-term strategies can help to solve some of our most intractable social problems.
