Episode Information
Scott Shuler from the Connecticut Department of Education, and Michael Yaffe of the Yale School of MusicThe No Child Left Behind law has changed the priorities of public schools - with many lower-performing districts forced to spend most of their time and money preparing students for important standardized tests in math, reading and writing. While few educators debate the merits of improving performance in these core academic areas - it comes at a cost.
Some districts have had to cut back on music programs, despite pretty clear evidence that the arts are a vital part of a student's overall education.
Today, where we live, we'll continue our series of back to school discussions - and we'll talk about the state of music education. What is the value of music education in schools? Are schools in Connecticut cutting back music programs?
We'll be joined by Scott Shuler from the state Department of Education, and Michael Yaffe of the Yale School of Music...a long-time advocate for music education in schools.
