It's been called a "cruel disease," marked by delusions and hallucinations, an altered "sense of self," and sometimes an inability to function in the world. It affects about 2.4 million people in the US; it's about 1% of the population. And, its onset - for many between the ages of 16 and 30 - can be a confusing time for patients, family members, and physicians.

Today, Where We Live, we'll talk about schizophrenia research and what we're learning about the causes of the disease. And, we'll talk to a patient suffering from schizoaffective disorder - a mix of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder that can be difficult to diagnose.
