European Jazz Stage 2007
A special jazz series for radio, European Jazz Stage highlights a herd of international jazz stars in vibrant settings - Larry Coryell, The Neville Brothers, McCoy Tyner, Joe Zawinul and others - and some jazz names you may not have heard, like Fay Claassen or Till Brönner.
Alto player Benjamin Herman (photo) is at home in styles from free jazz, to soul, to big band swing. His quartet is terrific and at times hilarious, featuring Han Bennink, the drummer whose straight-ahead playing is as convincing as his improvisation, and the amazing Anton Goudsmit on guitar.
EJS co-produced and captured his set at the famed Amsterdam Concertgebouw, one of the world's best known concert halls.
From the 2006 North Sea Jazz Festival we hear a set dedicated to the legendary trumpeter Clifford Brown, led by NEA Jazz Master, composer ("I Remember Clifford") and saxophonist Benny Golson. He's joined by trumpeters Roy Hargrove and Eddie Henderson, Lynne Arriale on piano, Buster Williams on bass and Al Foster on drums.
Daniel Frankl hosts.
