Microstamping involves a laser etching on the gun's firing pin, which in turn leaves a microscopic imprint on the discharged cartridge case. This technology has the potential to not only assist investigators at a crime scene, but could also deter gun owners from selling their weapons illegally. The bill which would require microstamping on all new semi automatic weapons sold after January 1st 2010. Four Connecticut gun manufacturers, Colt, Marlin, Sturm Ruger and Mossberg, are opposed to the bill claiming microstamping is ineffective, costly and will result in a loss of jobs.
