Connecticut began the new century with a wave of political scandals and then passed the 2005 “Clean Elections” law to limit the influence of private money and get candidates out of the fund-raising business.
In 2008, candidates made heavy use of the new public financing system, and the reform looked like a success. But a federal judge agreed with plaintiffs who said the law was unfair to upstart parties looking for a place on the ballot and a piece of the public financing pie. The 2010 elections are kind of a mess from the sheer uncertainty of it all. We’ll try to catch up to the story as it unspools.
