Do you get intimidated by jazz? I do.

I started going to New York jazz clubs while I was in college, which was shortly after the close of the American Civil War. And I still don't feel as though I really know what's going on.

Once, when the Hartford Courant jazz critic Owen McNally was sick, I got pressed into service reviewing a Chick Corea concert. I have never felt, in my life, more like an imposter.

But maybe there is no right or wrong way to dig jazz. And there's a good chance in the next month or so you might be buying jazz recordings for someone on your list or for yourself.

So we're doing a user-friendly jazz show today, with Gene Seymour of Newsday and bassist Nat Reeves, a recording aritst on the University of Hartford faculty.  We'll discuss some of the best recordings of 2009.  And in the one area I do know anything about, jazz vocals, Gene and I will talk about Nellie McKie and Doris Day.

BIG BROTHER - Vijay Iyer Trio
HUTCHHIKER'S GUIDE - Joshua Redman
