Dr. Steven Adamowski
Hartford Public Schools

Steven J. Adamowski was named Superintendent of the Hartford School District in November 2006.

Prior to Hartford, Dr. Adamowski was a Senior Fellow and Managing Director at the Washington, D.C.-based American Institutes for Research (AIR), where his work was focused on assisting school districts to improve their effectiveness. Prior to joining AIR, Dr. Adamowski served as Superintendent and CEO of the Cincinnati Public Schools, where he led a massive redesign and decentralization, which produced dramatic gains in student outcomes. Under his leadership, Cincinnati gained national recognition for its school accountability system, use of weighted, student-based budgeting, alignment of teacher evaluation and
compensation, improvement of early literacy, and redesign of high schools.

Dr. Adamowski previously served as Associate Secretary of Education in Delaware. He gained a national perspective on school improvement as a Senior Fellow at the Hudson
Institute where he led implementation of the Modern Red Schoolhouse, a
‘break the mold’ design of the New American Schools Development Corporation.

He holds an M.A. in education from Trinity College (Hartford, Connecticut), and a specialist degree in administration, planning and social policy from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. He earned his Ph.D. in educational administration from
Saint Louis University.
