WNPR's Where We Live Honored With National Award

Release Date: 07/21/2010

WNPR’s daily news/talk program Where We Live was recently honored with a national second place award for “Best Call-In Show” by the Public Radio News Directors Inc. (PRNDI). This award is the only national contest of its kind for public radio. Where We Live, in its brief four-year history, has been honored twice. In 2007, the program won first place in this same category.

Hosted by John Dankosky,WNPR’s Where We Live explores important issues and ideas that affect people living in Connecticut – creating conversations that draw in newsmakers, opinion leaders and engaged citizens. It airs weekdays 9–10 a.m. and 7–8 p.m. on WNPR 90.5 FM Hartford, 89.1 FM Norwich/New London, 88.5 FM Stamford/Greenwich, 91.3 FM Southampton, NY, 99.5 FM Storrs, and online at wnpr.org.

The award was given to Where We Live for a 2009 program called “The ABC’s of Kids’ TV,” which examined the history and educational aspect of children’s programming. The piece included audio segments from a variety of children’s shows, music, interviews and, of course, the listeners’ opinions. The winning entry was produced by Catie Talarski, senior WNPR producer;  Libby Conn Franklin, producer; and Tucker Ives, a WNPR intern. Dankosky called the award “a great honor, and a tribute to our production staff.”

The presentation of the award took place at the PRDNI annual meeting in Louisville, Kentucky on June 26. The judges noted that “this entry excels at tapping common shared experiences. Not only are there wonderful memories of Sesame Street in the show, the history of television for children is told in first-hand accounts by guests and callers. The host’s sense of wonder makes listening fun and highlights the personal value of the children’s programming.”

Where We Live is made possible by NewAlliance Bank.
