HARTFORD, Conn. (June 28, 2011) __  On Saturday, June 25, two of WNPR’s daily news/talk programs Where We Live and The Colin McEnroe Show were honored with three awards at the Public Radio News Directors Inc. (PRNDI) conference. Held in Arlington, Virginia, the public radio journalism conference awarded WNPR’s Where We Live with first place for “Best Call-In Show” and second place for “Best News and Public Affairs.” The Colin McEnroe Show won second place in the “Best Interview” category. These awards are the only national contest of their kind for public radio. Where We Live, in its five-year history, has been honored four times. This is the first PRNDI award for The Colin McEnroe Show, which began in 2009.

Hosted by John Dankosky,WNPR’s Where We Live explores important issues and ideas that affect people living in Connecticut – creating conversations that draw in newsmakers, opinion leaders and engaged citizens. It airs weekdays 9–10 a.m. and 7–8 p.m. on WNPR 90.5 FM Hartford, 89.1 FM Norwich/New London, 88.5 FM Stamford/Greenwich, 91.3 FM Southampton, NY, 99.5 FM Storrs, and online at wnpr.org.

Where We Live’s first place award for “Best Call-In Show” was specifically given to an episode called “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.” Originally broadcast on May 10, 2010, the program was produced in response to the Connecticut man who allegedly attempted to set off a bomb in New York’s Times Square. His neighbors described him as a “quiet, normal man” that “kept to himself” which begged the question – what is the role of a “neighbor” in modern day society? The winning entry was produced by Catie Talarski, senior WNPR producer; and Libby Conn Franklin, producer.

The second place award for “Best News and Public Affairs Show” was given to the Where We Live episode, “Sexual Assault on College Campuses.” Originally aired on May 4, 2010, the program looked at the widespread phenomenon of sexual assault on college campuses where studies show that one in five women who enter college will become the victim of rape or attempted rape before they graduate. The program examined the problem and addressed questions surrounding the way schools adjudicate crimes in-house. This winning entry was also produced by Talarski, Franklin, and Senior News Editor Diane Orson.

The Colin McEnroe Show won a second place award for “Best Interview” with “The Heart of Beth Bradley.” Originally aired on April 27, 2010, this moving program interviewed Beth Bradley, a young, healthy, popular radio host, who suddenly found herself one day in need of a heart transplant. McEnroe and his producer Patrick Skahill took great care to make this program about more than organ transplant statistics and the scarcity of donations, but rather about the relatable experiences of one person.

Hosted by author, humorist and newspaper columnist Colin McEnroe, The Colin McEnroe Show is an hour-long exploration of news, arts, culture and life that draws on national and local voices in daily conversation. The program airs weekdays from 1 to 2 p.m. and 8 to 9 p.m. on WNPR and WNPR.org.

Where We Live is made possible by the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center, the Connecticut Resources Recovery Authority (CRRA), and AARP-Connecticut.

The Colin McEnroe Show is made possible by Walker Systems Support, MA. in Liberal Studies at Wesleyan University, Wisdom House, Connecticut Repertory Theatre, Middlesex Hospital and Buttonwood Farm.
