Nature Enters a Miniature and Moving World in Hummingbirds: Magic in the Air

Release Date: 09/14/2010

Hummingbirds take extraordinary to a whole new level. They are the smallest warm-blooded creatures on the planet, but with wings that beat up to 200 times every second, they are among nature’s most accomplished athletes, the only birds able to hover, fly backwards, and even upside down. Hummingbird metabolisms are set in permanent overdrive, requiring them to consume more than half their body weight in nectar every day, and still they remain in constant threat of starving to death as they sleep. Utilizing the latest high-speed and infra-red camera technology, Nature takes viewers inside the extraordinary universe of these brilliant birds in Hummingbirds: Magic in the Air, airing Wednesday, September 15 at 8 p.m. on CPTV.

“Hummingbirds live life in the fast lane,” said Fred Kaufman, the Executive Producer of Nature. “They’re not only visually striking but highly creative in their survival strategies. That’s beauty and brains in one tiny package. Nature always strives to bring viewers the most amazing natural phenomena on earth. So get ready to be dazzled by these ballerinas in the air.” Nature has won nearly 600 honors from the television industry, the international wildlife film communities, and environmental organizations – including 10 Emmys, three Peabodys and the first award given to a television program by the Sierra Club.
