CPTV Commemorates 200th Anniversary of Lincoln’s Birth with Special Programming Starting Monday, February 9

Release Date: 01/27/2009

HARTFORD, Conn. – Wednesday, February 12th marks the 200th anniversary of Lincoln’s birth, and Connecticut Public Television (CPTV) is commemorating the event with a week of special programming looking at the life, death and legacy of one of our nation’s most revered presidents.

Witness a momentous American drama in American Experience: The Assassination of Lincoln at 9 p.m. on Monday, February 9. The program depicts the two tumultuous months in 1965 when the joy of peace was shattered by the heartache of assassination. At the heart of the story are two figures who define the extremes of character: Lincoln, who had the strength to transform suffering into infinite compassion, and Booth, who allowed hatred to curdle into destruction. The sorrow of a nation and the fury of its largest manhunt come together in this film.

On Wednesday, February 11, the eve of Lincoln’s birthday, CPTV airs a lesser-known side of Lincoln in Looking for Lincoln, an unprecedented two-hour broadcast that explores the life and legacy of the man widely considered one of our best and most enigmatic presidents. The documentary, airing at 9:15 p.m. and hosted by Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr. (African American Lives, Oprah’s Roots), addresses many of the controversies surrounding Lincoln – race, equality, religion, politics and depression – by carefully interpreting evidence from those who knew him and those who study him today. Pulitzer Prize-winning authors, former presidents and Lincoln scholars weigh in on Lincoln’s life and the legacy he left us.

The week’s special programming concludes with Young Lincoln, airing at 11:15 p.m. on Wednesday, February 11. The special examines how the joys and trials of Abraham Lincoln's boyhood years formed his personality, shaped his early political notions and molded his character. Aided by several notable historians, the documentary focuses on Lincoln's close bonds with his family, and the numerous personal tragedies that he was forced to endure during his formative years.
