CPTV Partners with Paul Newman’s Hole in the Wall Gang Camp to Celebrate the Camp’s 25th Anniversary

HARTFORD, Conn. (October 1, 2012) – Beginning this month, Connecticut Public Television (CPTV) will partner with The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, founded by the late actor Paul Newman, to celebrate the Camp’s 25th anniversary with a year’s worth of special programming.

In 1988, Paul Newman opened The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp in Ashford, Connecticut so that children coping with serious illnesses could have a special hideout where they could simply be kids. The Camp, which served 288 campers its first year, is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2012-13 with 20,000 children and family members now experiencing “a different kind of healing” annually. Each year, 2,500 are served onsite and 19,000 visits by the Hospital Outreach Program bring the fun and friendship of Camp into more than 20 sites throughout the Northeast – all free of charge. The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp is celebrating its anniversary with events and initiatives that will gather the Camp family together and invite new friends to support Paul Newman’s dream.

CPTV will feature a variety of programming over the next year recognizing the Camp’s contributions to bringing joy to children facing serious illnesses. On Friday, October 5 at 8:30 p.m., CPTV will broadcast The Power of Giving: Philanthropy, a one-hour CPTV documentary that profiles The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp and features an interview with founder Paul Newman. The documentary, Genesis – which tells the “hole” story of the Camp’s creation through accounts from Paul Newman, architects, construction workers, medical professionals and others – will be broadcast in the spring of 2013 on the state public television network. A comprehensive but as-yet-unnamed 25th anniversary documentary about the evolution and scope of the Camp’s impact on children and families is currently in production by CPTV and is expected to be released next fall. And throughout the year, other short vignettes about the Camp will air on CPTV.

“The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp has provided a ‘different kind of healing’ to thousands of remarkably brave children and we look forward to sharing our story during the 25th anniversary,” said CEO Jimmy Canton, who was a counselor when the Camp first opened in 1988. “We know that CPTV’s gift of storytelling will memorably capture Paul Newman’s dream for Camp and inspire the community to carry the torch that he has left in our care.”
