An Examination of Connecticut’s Legislative Judicial Oversight – This Week’s Topic on CPTV’s On the Record (OTR)

Release Date: 01/29/2009

HARTFORD, Conn. – On this week’s On the Record (OTR), airing on Connecticut Public Television (CPTV) on Friday, January 30 at 8:30 p.m. (with repeats airing on Sunday, February 1 at 10 a.m. and Monday, February 2 at 11:30 p.m.), host Steve Kotchko is joined by Judiciary Committee co-chair Rep. Michael Lawlor (D-East Haven) and Judiciary Committee member Sen. Andrew Roraback (R-Goshen). Their topic of discussion includes whether or not changes are needed in the way the legislature processes, approves, and monitors judges in light of two recent controversies – namely the nail-biting reconfirmation vote for Superior Court Judge Patricia Swords and the DUI arrest of Judge Curtissa Cofield.

The first case focuses on how judges are reappointed and their behavior on the bench. The second deals with what recourse lawmakers have about a judge's performance away from court during their term.

Plus, the “Notes from the Capitol” segment will cover the “first stirrings” of the 2010 gubernatorial race – former Speaker of the House James Amann is announcing his candidacy next month, and Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz said this week she's starting an exploratory committee. Christopher Keating of the Hartford Courant will provide his insights.
