On Deadline: Is Time Running Out for the Press?
Release Date: 02/25/2010
New CPTV Original Profiles the Perils of Today’s Newspapers, Including the Recent Problems of the Bristol Press
Premieres Thursday, March 4 at 8 p.m. on Connecticut Public Television (CPTV);
Encore presentation on Friday, March 5 at 10 p.m.
In an age of declining readership, falling advertising revenue and the fast invasion of the Internet, newspapers as we have known them are changing. The perils of today’s print media have been felt in Connecticut, with two major dailies in crisis over the past year. In an effort to address this issue, Connecticut Public Television (CPTV will premiere On Deadline: Is Time Running Out for the Press?, a new one-hour CPTV Original documentary that examines the current state of print media. The documentary will premiere on Thursday, March 4 at 8 p.m. on CPTV, with an encore presentation on Friday, March 5 at 10 p.m.
Co-produced by John and Rosemary Keogh O’Neill and Jeff Young, On Deadline focuses on the near-demise of the Bristol Press – and to a lesser extent, the New Britain Herald – two years ago, with an update regarding the papers’ present situations. Narrated by broadcast journalist Janet Peckinpaugh, the film also includes interviews with key figures of the news business, many of whom have changed with today’s new technology and brought news coverage online in serious, thoughtful and sustainable ways.
On Tuesday, March 2 at 7:30 p.m., the Mark Twain House & Museum is collaborating with CPTV on a screening of the documentary followed by a panel discussion led by John Dankosky, news director, WNPR/Connecticut Public Radio. Participants on the panel include: Michael Schroder, editor and publisher of the New Britain Herald and the Bristol Press; Steve Collins, staff writer of the Bristol Press; Naedine Hazell, editor of the Hartford Courant; Christine Stuart, editor/owner of CTNewsJunkie.com; and Mark Pazniokas, capitol bureau chief of CTMirror.org. Tickets are $15 ($10 for Mark Twain House & Museum and CPTV and WNPR members) and can be purchased by calling 860-280-3130.
On Deadline: Is Time Running Out for the Press? is co-produced by John and Rosemary Keogh O’Neill and Jeff Young. Narrated by Janet Peckinpaugh.
