CPTV's War Zone/Comfort Zone Premiere

Release Date: 10/26/2011

The Struggle for Veterans’ Rights
War Zone/Comfort Zone to Premiere on CPTV on Tuesday, November 8 at 9 p.m (repeat airing on Sunday, 11/13)

HARTFORD, Conn. (October 26, 2011) – When women serve in the United States military, they risk their lives to protect America's freedoms. What they come home to, however, is less than a heroes welcome. Many face homelessness, joblessness, poor service at the VA and the psychological and physiological impacts of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and military sexual trauma. In the new documentary War Zone/Comfort Zone, premiering on Connecticut Public Television (CPTV) on Tuesday, November 8 at 9 p.m. (with a repeat airing on Sunday, November 13 at 6 p.m.), producer Lizzie Warren uncovers the silent suffering of those veterans as well as the struggle of two women—Shalini Madaras of Wilton and Joy Kiss of Milford—to establish transitional, supportive housing for female veterans.

“Around fourteen percent of the active duty military is made of up women and more than twenty-four percent of the National Guard,” said Warren. “While a range of housing options exist for their brothers, as these women come home there are almost no transitional beds for them. War Zone/Comfort Zone tells the story of Madaras and Kiss’s fight to develop Connecticut's first transitional housing for homeless women veterans. They persevere through surprising community opposition.”

War Zone/Comfort Zone weaves together Madaras and Kiss’s story with the intense and personal stories of women veterans who sacrificed everything to defend their nation and came home only to poverty, fear and a shocking lack of community and public support waiting for them. Their determination is chronicled in the documentary.
