CPTV Presents World Premiere of New PBS Concert Special, Jeff Beck Honors Les Paul

Release Date: 10/05/2010

Premieres Saturday, October 9 at 9 p.m. exclusively on Connecticut Public Television (CPTV)

Join acclaimed guitarist Jeff Beck and his special musical guests as they play a tribute to the legendary Les Paul in New York City in a new concert special taped on June 9, 2010, what was to be Paul’s 95th birthday. This PBS concert special, set to air on stations around the country in December, is getting its world premiere this Saturday, October 9 at 9 p.m. exclusively on Connecticut Public Television (CPTV).

Backed by the Imelda May band, with special guests Brian Setzer, Gary U.S. Bonds and Trombone Shorty, this intimate concert proves why Jeff Beck is considered one of the greatest guitarists to ever strap on the instrument, and why he is an apt host for an evening devoted to Les Paul, the instrument’s most illustrious innovator. In addition to a career with a stunning 43 top 40 hits, Les Paul is widely credited as the inventor of both the solid-bodied electric guitar and the multi-track recording machine. These innovations, made in the 1940s and 50s, made possible a new generation of music in the 1960s.

Honoring Les Paul is the 5-time Grammy winner for Best Rock Instrumental performance and two-time Rock and Roll Hall of fame inductee Jeff Beck. Jeff and the band play Les Paul classics such as How High the Moon, Mockin’ Bird Hill and Bye Bye Blues, as well as blistering versions of rock-n-roll staples such as Twenty Flight Rock, Peter Gunn, Rocking Is Our Business, New Orleans, and the incredible Walking in the Sand.

Taped at the Iridium Jazz club in New York City, where Les Paul took the stage every week from 1995 until his passing in August 2009, this intimate concert features an invite-only, star-studded audience, incredible musicianship, and powerful songs that make for an unforgettable evening.

The broadcast on Saturday will feature segments from an interview that CPTV’s Lee Newton did with Jeff Beck in June just after the taping of the concert. She asked Beck when he first became
aware of Les Paul and his music. “It was my Mum’s fault for allowing me to stay up late in the 1950s and I heard his music [on the radio],” Beck explained. “It was [my] first awakening to that sound with the twangy electric guitar. From that minute on, his name is there in the sound of that guitar.”
