CPTV Presents Smothered: The Censorship Struggles of the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour on Saturday, October 17 at 7:30 p.m.

Release Date: 10/14/2009

Coining the signature line, "Mom always liked you best!", The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour became one of the most influential and controversial American TV programs of the Vietnam War era. With a young and brash stable of writers and performers, including Steve Martin and Rob Reiner, The Smothers Brothers rapidly evolved into a show that extended the boundaries of what was considered permissible in television satire. On Saturday, October 17 at 7:30 p.m., CPTV will give audiences an in-depth look at the story behind their success. Smothered: The Censorship Struggles of the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour examines the turmoil surrounding the late-1960s variety show that brought an edgy new brand of political comedy to the airwaves for three seasons. Despite popular success, the brothers’ fondness for material that was critical of the political mainstream, and sympathetic to the emerging counterculture, led to their cancellation by the CBS network in 1969.

When Tom and Dick Smothers were fired in 1969, they took the show network, CBS, to court…and won. This is the fascinating true story as told by its key players, including the Smothers Brothers themselves and show writers Rob Reiner and Mason William. Smothered: The Censorship Struggles of the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour will also include performances by Joan Baez, Pete Seeger, and Harry Belafonte, as well as commentary by former CBS executives. Smothered: The Censorship Struggles of the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour is part of CPTV’s membership campaign and Red Carpet Series. Tune in to learn about exclusive ticket opportunities for an upcoming Smothers Brothers Connecticut performance.
