CPTV Kicks Off a New Season of Call the Midwife and Debuts Masterpiece Classic’s “Mr. Selfridge”

Release Date: 03/13/2013

HARTFORD Conn. (March 13, 2013) – This month, a highly anticipated line-up of programming solidifies CPTV’s Sunday nights as the destination for quality drama. The second season of the critically acclaimed British drama Call the Midwife and the new drama series from Masterpiece ClassicMr. Selfridge” premiere Sunday, March 31 at 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. respectively on Connecticut Public Television (CPTV).

Recognized as a hit show on both sides of the Atlantic, drawing audiences from the UK and attracting over three million viewers in the first season in the US, Call the Midwife is a welcome addition to CPTV’s line-up of powerful dramas.

Call the Midwife—based on the best-selling memoirs of the late Jennifer Worth—sees the return of all its well-loved characters as well as some new faces. Nonnatus House opens its doors to warmly welcome the audience back into 1950s East End London and continues to follow Poplar’s community of exceptional midwives and nursing nuns. An introduction of a new character, a medical orderly named Jane, is set to take place in Season Two. The new season stays true to its roots viewers can expect to see more births, babies and bicycling, plus a blossoming romance from an unexpected quarter.

Starring Jeremy Piven, previously of Entourage, Masterpiece Classic “Mr. Selfridge” is set in 1909 London, when women were reveling in a new sense of freedom and modernity. This exciting new production follows business visionary Harry Gordon Selfridge, who took the ideas behind his Marshall Field’s department store in Chicago and recreated them into a modern department store in Britain. Pioneering and reckless, with an almost manic energy, Selfridge created a theater of retail where any topic or trend was showcased; the more exciting, entertaining or eccentric the better.

Jeremy Piven explained Selfridge’s innovations in a recent interview. “In one episode, Harry decides to put the beauty products at the front of his store, so as soon as the customers walked in they would see these perfumes and beauty products,” explained Piven. “No one was doing this yet in the UK, though they were dabbling with it in Paris. He was smart enough to take from the really brilliant trailblazing cultures.”
