CPTV Honors Walter Cronkite with Back-To-Back Specials on Thursday, July 23 Starting at 9 p.m.

Release Date: 07/20/2009

American Masters and Connecticut & the Sea Will Preempt Previously Scheduled Programming

Connecticut Public Television (CPTV) honors legendary broadcast journalist Walter Cronkite with an evening of programming dedicated to his life and talents. Tune in to CPTV on Thursday, July 23 at 9 p.m. for American Masters’ presentation of Walter Cronkite: Witness to History, followed by Connecticut & the Sea, a CPTV Original documentary narrated by Cronkite.

The award-winning PBS series American Masters presents the story of Cronkite’s astounding career in Walter Cronkite: Witness to History. Follow Cronkite’s journey from a 12-year-old boy who idolized foreign correspondents to the “most trusted man in America,” filling the anchor desk at CBS News for almost twenty years. Along the way, he covered many of the most dramatic events of the twentieth century, from the Nuremburg trials to the assassination of JFK to the moon landings – and through it all, he adhered to his credo of fast, accurate and unbiased news reporting. This 2006 documentary includes archival footage and commentary by Cronkite’s peers, including Tom Brokaw, Morley Safer, Mike Wallace and more.

Then, stay tuned for Connecticut & the Sea. Produced by CPTV and the Connecticut Humanities Council in association with Mystic Seaport, The Museum of America and the Sea, this documentary tells the story of how Connecticut’s history was largely shaped by its coastal location, and explores everything from Native American maritime trade to Connecticut’s whaling and shipbuilding industries. Best of all, the 90-minute special is introduced and narrated by Cronkite himself, who infuses the film with his genial trademark style.

CPTV salutes Walter Cronkite and celebrates his vast contribution to the field of broadcast journalism. Tune in on Thursday, July 23 to catch both these programs – and to remember one of America’s most beloved media figures.
