CPTV Airs an Evening of Programs Focused on Mental Health Issues

Release Date: 04/28/2009

HARTFORD, Conn. – On Tuesday, May 5, Connecticut Public Television (CPTV) is putting the focus on mental health issues. The special night of programming features ways that people are dealing with mental illness and resources available to assist them in reaching their fullest potential.

It all begins at 9 p.m. with “Growing Up With Mental Illness,” an episode of the CPTV Original Series Opening Doors, Opening Minds. “Growing Up With Mental Illness” introduces viewers to Anna, Sky, Brett and Michaela, a group of young people who are among the 20 percent of American children dealing with a diagnosable mental illness. Learn about the challenges these young people face and see how they are able to remain hopeful about their futures.

Then at 9:30 p.m., Cry for Help showcases the issues of young people being affected by mental illness, and features adolescents sharing their own stories about their personal struggles. Cry for Help affords a new understanding of the teens’ world and gives parents and educators a basis for recognizing the warning signs of teens in trouble.

At 10:30 p.m., another episode of Opening Doors, Opening Minds, entitled “Family Impact,” examines the ways in which family members are affected when someone is suffering from mental illness. The program features the stories of three real-life families and addresses the questions: How do these family members find support? What unique problems do they encounter? How do they best help their afflicted loved one?

Opening Doors, Opening Minds is a CPTV Connecting our Communities Initiative, made possible by The Governor’s Mental Health Transformation grant, funded by SAMHSA.
