CPTV Celebrates 50th Anniversary Kick-Off at Governor’s Residence Reception

HARTFORD, Conn. (October 11, 2012) – While Connecticut Public Television may have started with humble beginnings in the dark basement of Trinity College’s library in 1962, the state’s PBS station, now celebrating its 50th anniversary, celebrated in high style Wednesday night, October 10 at a special reception held at the Governor’s Residence.

With Governor Dannel Malloy unable to attend due to other commitments, First Lady Cathy Malloy presented a Governor’s Proclamation recognizing CPTV’s golden anniversary to Jerry Franklin, President & CEO of the Connecticut Public Broadcasting Network. Over 100 business and civic leaders, as well as corporate supporters of CPTV, gathered at the Residence to join in the celebration, many of whom sampled a specialty cocktail made by Master Mixologist David Brogan called the CPTV Fall Fizz, an apple-flavored cocktail made only from Connecticut-made spirits and ingredients.

Jerry Franklin, joined by Chairman of the Board of Trustees Arthur Diedrick, told the group that it was just 50 years ago that a small group from Trinity College, the Travelers and other civic-minded individuals joined together to start an educational television station in the state, but CPTV was soon making innovative decisions that would set the standard for many media outlets today. “While many think CPTV first starting airing sports with the UConn Women, we were actually one of the first stations to broadcast live tennis in 1964.” Franklin playfully continued, “A little company in Bristol may have just gotten the idea to broadcast sports from us.” Franklin continued his remarks by sharing some of the network’s plans for the next 50 years, most notably its CPTV Sports channel and the 2013 opening of its Learning Lab school for high school students and U.S. veterans. Also in attendance was Paul Pendergast, the station’s new Vice President of Institutional Advancement, who is leading CPTV’s fundraising efforts for these endeavors.
