CPTV’s All Things Connecticut: Power of Giving Special Tells Stories of Connecticut’s Generous Spirit
Premieres Friday, December 14 at 8:30 p.m. on Connecticut Public Television (CPTV); encore broadcast on Sunday, December 16 at 10:30 a.m.
In a new edition of the magazine-style series All Things Connecticut, CPTV presents a special collection of inspiring stories of Connecticut citizens making a difference in their community through charitable acts and giving. All Things Connecticut: Power of Giving Special premieres on Friday, December 14 at 8:30 p.m. on Connecticut Public Television (CPTV), with an encore broadcast on Sunday, December 16 at 10:30 a.m.
Host Matt Roberts introduces this special edition of All Things Connecticut from one of the state’s most beautiful and historic cemeteries, Hartford’s Cedar Hill Cemetery. Established in 1864, Cedar Hill was intended by its founders not only as a final resting place, but also as a public park used for picnics, walks, carriage rides and more. And it continues to be a retreat of solitude for local residents today.
In this special, Roberts brings us the story of True Colors, a Hartford organization that gives support to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered teens. Mentors in the program assist LGBT teens suffering from trauma, abuse and abandonment while offering them a safe place to be themselves.
The special also profiles a Connecticut woman leading the charge to bring aid and comfort to American troops overseas. By collecting their favorite foods, cosmetic products and messages from home, she and her volunteers ship individualized care packages around the world.
Teenagers at Newtown High School aren’t sitting around waiting for something to do. They’re taking the lead and organizing events to benefit others. All Things Connecticut: Power of Giving Special follows these motivated teens as they organize their second bone marrow drive gathering possible donors and sharing information about the program.
Host Matt Roberts also meets Ginger Katz, who established the Courage to Speak Foundation after her son, Ian, died of a drug overdose. Refusing to sweep her son’s addiction under the rug, she travels to schools throughout Connecticut encouraging kids to stay away from drugs, as well as speaking up when they see someone in trouble.
And finally the show profiles the Dress for Success program. Since you only get one chance to make a great first impression, this Hartford organization is helping women do just that by providing tools for employment, a professional interview outfit and assistance with resumes and personal development.
First premiering in 2009, All Things Connecticut is CPTV’s signature magazine-style series telling the stories that make the Nutmeg State a unique place to live, work and play. From eco-innovations to family-friendly outdoor activities, from fascinating biographies to stunning video essays, this local series turns the spotlight on every wonderful facet of Connecticut life.
All Things Connecticut: Power of Giving Special is a CPTV production and made possible by our founding partner, Newman’s Own Foundation.
