CPTV’s New Four-Part Series Media Is Magic:
Learning Through a Whole New Lens
7th Graders from America’s Choice at SAND School in Hartford Are Put in the Director’s Seat
Premieres Sunday mornings at 8 a.m., starting July 10 on Connecticut Public Television (CPTV)
This past year, Connecticut Public Broadcasting Network’s Media Lab collaborated with 7th grade students at America’s Choice at SAND School in Hartford.
What resulted was the SAND Media Enrichment Program, a remarkable innovative concept that uses journalism and technical media skills to improve student research, storytelling, and presentation skills. Ms. Latesha Jones, Acting Principal at America’s Choice at SAND School, commented on the program, “Some of our students started out in the 50-percentile range in testing, and those students who participated at CPTV went on to master skills at an 80- or 90-percent level.” The students’ hard work now culminates in the brand-new CPTV Kids series, Media Is Magic: Learning Through a Whole New Lens, airing Sunday mornings at 8 a.m.beginning July 10 on Connecticut Public Television (CPTV).
Hosted by CPBN instructor and producer Anna Nalitov and presented in four half-hour installments, the series showcase both the students’ finished projects and the process of creating content-based curriculum. This includes researching and writing relevant segments related to school-based topics as well as to on-the-job technical experience in video and sound production and editing. Paul Pfeffer, manager of educational media for CPBN, said, “The students were taught fundamental technical and journalism concepts that they had to apply to complete their projects. It was fun to see how their attraction to the technology inspired them to study harder, research more thoroughly, write more convincingly and present their ideas more clearly.”

At the conclusion of each of the subject-specific learning modules, students and their teachers – Marcus Jennings, Randy Silmon, Felicita Rosario and Brittany Wilson – visit CPTV to be both interviewed about their projects. These interviews form the basis of the television programs. Additionally, students performed various production tasks including camera operator and stage manager.
