On Saturday, September 4, the Connecticut Public Broadcasting Network (CPBN) is launching a new broadcast channel called CPTV4U.

CPTV4U, available to both over-the-air and cable viewers, is a new 24/7 channel featuring award-winning drama, intellectually engaging news and talk programming, electrifying concert performances, intriguing independent films, breathtaking nature shows, hilarious British comedy and all the quality programs viewers have come to expect from CPTV.

“CPTV4U grew out of a unique problem we have here at CPTV: too many amazing programs and not enough time in the day to broadcast them,” remarked Joanne Whitehead, CPTV’s Program Director. “This additional channel offers us a new opportunity to give our viewers the shows they have been requesting, including more international news, more mystery and drama, more British comedy and generally more of everything.” Furthermore, many of public television’s signature shows will get a new broadcast life and more viewer-friendly encore presentations on CPTV4U, including The Charlie Rose Show, Tavis Smiley, Austin City Limits, Masterpiece, BBC World and more.

CPTV4U will feature a different genre of prime-time programming every night of the week:
· Sunday – Mystery & Music
· Monday – Nature & Travel
· Tuesday – Drama
· Wednesday – History
· Thursday – Documentary & Independent Film
· Friday – Science
· Saturday – Comedy & Performance

With the transition to digital television (DTV), broadcasters gained the ability to provide multiple programming choices to their viewers. This new paradigm in television, called multicasting, went into effect in June of 2009 for all broadcasters and allowed additional channels like CPTV4U to become available both for over-the-air and cable viewers.

“The digital conversion allowed CPTV to provide viewers with more of the quality and diverse programming they have come to appreciate as a part of our television broadcast services,” commented Jerry Franklin, President & CEO of the Connecticut Public Broadcasting Network (CPBN). “CPTV4U is the next logical step toward our goal of a premium and wide-ranging broadcast network.”
