CPBN Education Department Productions Win Awards from the NATAS Boston/New England Chapter

Release Date: 05/06/2014

The Connecticut Public Broadcasting Network (CPBN) Education Department was recently recognized for its outstanding television production work by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) Boston/New England Chapter. CPBN’s Education Department – which includes the CPBN Media Lab, a college internship program, along with the CPBN Learning Lab, home of the Journalism & Media Academy Magnet School satellite campus and the Institute for Advanced Media (IAM) – received three student awards and four nominations in the 2014 College/University division and one win and one honorable mention in the 2014 High School division. All of the awards were given for work created in 2013.

The CPBN Media Lab, which teaches digital arts and media production skills, received student honors for episodes in the Outdoor Enthusiast series, an online and on-air project that takes viewers on location in Connecticut with personal travelogues and profiles. In the Long Form – Non-Fiction category “Outdoor Enthusiast: Skydive Danielson” was honored, and “Outdoor Enthusiast: Lakeside Watersports” was recognized in the Director category. In addition, a piece entitled “Newman’s Own Honoring Those Who Serve Challenge,” a video piece designed to raise awareness about IAM’s Veterans Vocational Training Program, was the winner in the Public Service Announcement category.

Also, the CPBN Media Lab received four nominations for other video pieces, including nominations for Short Form – Fiction for “Barney at CPTV’s 50th Anniversary Gala”; Short Form – Non-Fiction for “Outdoor Enthusiast: Lakeside Watersports”; Long Form – Fiction for “Outdoor Enthusiast: Woodcock Nature Center”; and Editing for “(I)NTERVIEW: Damon Scott.”

“It is deeply satisfying that our signature Media Lab educational projects, Outdoor Enthusiast and (I)NTERVIEW, received top honors and nominations,” said Paul Pfeffer, CPBN Manager of Education. “These have been our building blocks for training college students on how to use digital technology to tell a compelling story.

“When we began to develop the CPBN Learning Lab, a satellite campus of the Journalism & Media Academy Magnet School (JMA), we set a goal to achieve the same level of success for the high school students who participated in the program. Being honored in the high school public service announcement and directing categories for AttendanceMatters in the inaugural year of our historic partnership with the Hartford Public Schools is immensely gratifying.”

About Connecticut Public Broadcasting Network
The Connecticut Public Broadcasting Network (CPBN) has been Connecticut’s largest classroom for 50 years, bringing high-quality programs to thousands of people every day. In 2013, CPBN strengthened its mission to serve, educate and enlighten by creating a state-of-the-art teaching facility, the Learning Lab – 20,000 square feet of classroom and studio space housed on two floors of CPBN’s Asylum Hill offices. The Learning Lab serves as the satellite campus of the Journalism and Media Academy Magnet School (a partnership with Hartford Public Schools) and as the location of the Institute for Advanced Media (IAM), providing journalism and media skills training to diverse audiences throughout Connecticut. IAM is also the home of CPBN’s Veterans Vocational Training Program, a unique program that offers free training in journalism and digital media skills to U.S. veterans and their families and caregivers. CPBN also hosts the Media Lab, a hands-on original content producing educational production unit for college students that creates 21st century journalists and trains instructors to pass that gift forward.

The Connecticut Public Broadcasting Network (CBPN) also includes CPTV and WNPR. CPTV, a media service of CPBN, is a locally and nationally recognized producer and presenter of quality public television programming, including original documentaries, public affairs shows and educational programming. CPTV has built a reputation as a leader in children’s programming, including playing an historic role in bringing Barney & Friends™, Bob the Builder™ and Thomas & Friends™ to public television. The station offers 11.5 hours of positive, nurturing children’s programs each weekday, reaching 50,000 to 70,000 households daily.

In addition, CBPN includes WNPR, an affiliate of National Public Radio, Public Radio International and American Public Media. WNPR serves 276,000 listeners weekly in Connecticut, New York and Rhode Island with news and information. Its award-winning local programming includes The Faith Middleton Show, The Colin McEnroe Show and Where We Live. CPBN also includes two affiliate channels: CPTV4U, a 24/7 television channel featuring award-winning drama, news and talk programming, concert performances, independent films, nature shows, British comedy and more; and CPTV Sports, Connecticut’s only 24-hour local sports network, covering statewide high school, college, semi-professional and professional sports.
