This April, CPTV is remembering the Holocaust with special programs dedicated to honoring those who suffered and perished during this dark and terrible time. This year Holocaust Remembrance Day, or Yom Hashoah – a day dedicated to the remembrance of and education about the horrors of the Holocaust – falls on Sunday, April 11.

Tune into CPTV on Holocaust Remembrance day at 9 p.m. for the premiere of Masterpiece Classic: The Diary of Anne Frank. Adapted by Deborah Moggach, who also wrote the screenplay for the 2005 film, Pride & Prejudice, this new drama presents the most accurate-ever adaptation of the memoir. It draws on Anne Frank’s actual words to a greater extent than any previous dramatization, and stars Ellie Kendrick (An Education) as Anne, a typical 13-year-old at odds with her mother, interested in boys, and intrigued by her unfolding sexual development. Anne’s world is ripped apart when she and her family must cloister themselves in a secret annex to avoid being captured by the Nazis. This masterful adaptation also stars Iain Glen as Anne’s optimistic father Otto, and Tamsin Greig as Anne’s mother Edith, who sees with clear-eyed horror the terrible fate that may await them all.

On Monday, April 12 at 11 p.m., CPTV airs Independent Lens: Steal a Pencil for Me. This intriguing story chronicles the unlikely romance of two star-crossed lovers in the improbable setting of a Nazi concentration camp. Here, the separated lovers write lyrical letters to one another on stolen pencil stubs.

CPTV premieres Among the Righteous on Friday, April 16 at 10 p.m. This documentary looks at what happened to the Jewish people of North Africa during the Holocaust. It explores the remarkable stories of Arabs who protected and hid Jewish families in a time of Nazi, Vichy and Facist rule.

Later that night at 11 p.m., Independent Lens presents Blessed is the Match, a film about Hannah Senesh, the World War II-era poet and diarist who became a paratrooper, resistance fighter and modern-day Joan of Arc. Safe in Palestine in 1944, she joined a mission to rescue Jews in her native Hungary. Parachuting behind enemy lines, she was captured, tortured and ultimately executed by the Nazis. Narrated by Academy Award-nominated actress Joan Allen.
