Connecticut Public Broadcasting Network (CPBN) Media Lab Publishes First E-Books

Art Is and Gardening with Nature are now available on iTunes

HARTFORD, Conn. (September 10, 2013) – The CPBN Media Lab, which is comprised of college interns who create content for the Connecticut Public Broadcasting Network, has published two new e-books. The interactive books, Art Is and Gardening with Nature, are now available in the iTunes store.

“The project fits with the Media Lab’s profile as a pioneer and innovator,” said Paul Pfeffer, manager of education services at CPBN. “We are comfortable being at the center of the convergence of new media tools, software and production methods.”

The interactive e-books were created with Apple’s iBooks Author. Gardening with Nature is a collaborative effort of CPTV, the CPBN Media Lab and the UConn Cooperative Extension System (CES) and features Dr. Carl Salsedo, Extension Educator in Horticulture with UConn CES. “Working with CPTV to make the initial videos was great,” explained Salsedo, host of the Gardening with Nature series. “I am very excited that this information will now be available in a new engaging format because of the great work of the CPBN Media Lab.”

Donna Sodipo, CPBN director of education services, added “The Media Lab serves as the innovation hub for the entire organization—with the unique ability to test and explore the latest technology for use in our educational programs and as real-world testing for our evolving media creation methods and strategies. This company innovation is a prime example of how the Media Lab refreshes CPBN’s thinking and use of technology.”

Anthony Contarino, a Media Lab intern, is the creator of the Gardening with Nature e-book, currently available on iTunes. Marie Kuhn Snow edited the original text and photographs. Art Is (also available on iTunes) was created by Media Lab intern Nicole Gibson and written and hosted by Joshua Gaestel and Tikeyah Whittle, both Media Lab graduates. Both e-books, which include video and other interactive materials, require an iPad with iBooks 2 or later and IOS 5 or later to view.

As a service of the Connecticut Public Broadcasting Network, the CPBN Media Lab creates 21st century journalists and trains instructors to pass that gift forward. Since 2007, the CPBN Media Lab has provided real world technical and journalism training for over 500 Connecticut students, from middle school to college postgraduates.
