Retirement Realities: A Town Hall Meeting
Premieres Thursday, December 15 at 8:30 p.m. on Connecticut Public Television (CPTV); Encore broadcast on Sunday, December 18 at 12:30 p.m.
A recent AARP Public Policy Institute survey showed that a majority of Americans are “not too confident” or “not at all confident” about having enough money for a comfortable retirement. As Baby Boomers grow older and the economy continues to falter, there is increased pressure on federal programs like Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, leaving many to wonder what the reality of retirement will be for them.
On Thursday, December 15 at 8:30 p.m. (with an encore broadcast on Sunday, December 18 at 12:30 p.m.), Connecticut Public Television (CPTV) takes a hard look at securing a financial future during uncertain times with the new program Retirement Realities: A Town Hall Meeting. Hosted by author, humorist and University of Connecticut English professor Gina Barreca, this one-hour CPTV Original features a panel of experts explaining the issues impacting the retirement landscape and how to be better prepared. Retirement Realities also helps Connecticut professionals and young people who are entering the workforce establish a new mindset about securing their financial future.
Retirement Realities: A Town Hall Meeting is a Connecting Our Communities initiative presented by AARP Connecticut.
Expert panelists scheduled to appear include:
- Ken Gronbach – Demographics Expert and Generational Marketer, KGC Direct
- Teresa Younger – Executive Director, Permanent Commission on the Status of Women
- David Certner –Legislative Counsel and Director of Legislative Policy for Government Affairs, AARP
Economist Ron Van Winkle, West Hartford Town Manager, will also be in attendance to discuss how municipalities like West Hartford are handling employee retirement plans and 401K funds.
Retirement Realities includes information on a variety of topics such as how the housing market and volatile stock market have forced many people to put their retirement plans on hold; homecare vs. nursing homes; outliving savings and pensions; encore careers; and the current status of Social Security and possible changes to Medicare due to the Joint Congressional Super Committee’s failure to find $1.2 trillion dollars in revenue savings.
Whether it’s fast approaching or decades away, retirement planning is a complex issue, making Retirement Realities: A Town Hall Meeting essential viewing for anyone who wants to understand the difficult dynamics of retirement stability.
