CPBN Announces CPTV/WNPR’s Youth Media Workshop, Coming Summer 2009

Release Date: 04/15/2009

HARTFORD, Conn. – Connecticut Public Broadcasting (CPBN) is proud to announce the formation of CPTV/WNPR’s Youth Media Workshop, coming to CPBN’s Hartford headquarters this summer.

This exciting, all-new summer program introduces students (ages 12 through 15) to the fascinating and growing field of media production. The intensive one-week program will provide students with the opportunity to collaborate on a production that will culminate in a special preview screening on the last day of the workshop.

Jay Whitsett, CPTV’s Emmy Award-winning vice president of local programming, will instruct students on all aspects of the complex process of television production, from initial concept through screening. Throughout the week, students also will benefit from the expertise of CPTV and WNPR’s media production staff and special guests will maximize student exposure to the “real world” of media production.

In addition to hands-on instruction, students also will have the opportunity to further develop life skills such as teamwork, leadership, commitment, problem solving and managing responsibility.

Media is a growing industry – especially in Connecticut, where Governor Rell has created tax incentives for production studios. As a result, Connecticut has seen an increase in the number of media-related jobs which is expected to continue for the foreseeable future.  Exposure to careers in media may help students to envision their future in this exciting field!

Students enrolled in the workshop will have the benefit of being taught by industry professionals. They will also receive full access to state-of-the-art production facilities and equipment. All students participating in the workshop will receive a DVD of their completed project. Finally, the workshop encompasses all aspects of media – including televison, radio, web, on-demand, podcast, vodcast and mobile – so students will leave with a broad new pool of knowledge.

The workshop dates are as follows:

Session 1:         7/13-7/17, 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Session 2:         7/20-7/24, 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
