CPTV Goes Green with Emerald Isle Programming

Release Date: 03/04/2009

HARTFORD, Conn. –  Connecticut may just be shedding the shroud of winter, but Connecticut Public Television (CPTV, www.cptv.org) is celebrating the Emerald Isle with a full day of lively, verdant programming. On Saturday, March 21, CPTV takes viewers on a whirlwind tour of Ireland, covering the nation’s depth and breadth with travel, cooking and
pub-hopping specials.

Programming begins at 12:30 p.m. with Travels in Europe with Rick Steves: Belfast and the Best of Northern Ireland, a cross-country, cross-culture journey. Popular guidebook author Rick Steves takes viewers through picturesque Northern Ireland including politically charged Belfast, the Antrim Coast and rough-and-tumble Derry. At 1 p.m., head for the beautiful west coast with smart travelling expert Rudy Maxa. In Smart Travels with Rudy Maxa: Ireland’s West Coast viewers will get tips on shopping, banqueting and even bicycle renting. Rounding off the Irish odyssey at 1:30 is Burt Wolf’s Travels and Traditions. Wolf dives into the heart of history with a look at the true story – and emergent legends – of St. Patrick.

For a closer-to-home experience that still retains the Irish charm, CPTV gives viewers a whole afternoon of mouthwatering food programming. From 2 p.m. until 3:30, America’s Test Kitchen, Cook’s Country Kitchen and Everyday Food take on hearty meat-and-potatoes topics. Learn some tricks to jazz up the timid tuber with Master Class at Johnson and Wales at 3 p.m., and Jacques Pepin demonstrates a delightful potato gratin recipe on Fast Food My Way at 4 p.m. For a balmy break from the rugged Isle, José Andrés cooks up some wrinkled potato dishes on the Canary Islands in Made in Spain. The culinary story concludes with Sarah’s Weeknight Meals at 5 p.m. – just in time for dinner.

Finally, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Frank McCourt takes viewers on an exciting and visually stunning tour of Dublin’s most notable historic pubs, as well as the many places of interest that surround them. Historic Pubs of Dublin wraps the day up at 6 p.m. on CPTV.
