CPTV and WNPR Receive Media Awards for Two Special Presentations on Living with Mental Illness

Release Date: 02/17/2009

HARTFORD, Conn.Connecticut Public Television (CPTV) and Connecticut Public Radio (WNPR) have both received Mental Illness Awareness Media Awards for their outstanding programs on mental illness. The awards are presented by the Connecticut Psychiatric Society (CPS), the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS).

CPTV received a first place award in the broadcast category for its program Opening Doors, Opening Minds. The multi-part series tells compelling stories about how Connecticut residents live with mental illness. It illustrates how mental health is essential to overall health and demonstrates that recovery from mental illness is possible. Opening Doors, Opening Minds was a CPTV Connecting our Communities Initiative, made possible by The Governor’s Mental Health Transformation grant, funded by SAMHSA (SAM-sa).

“We’re hoping to change the misconceptions about mental illness and transform attitudes in the community,” said Jennifer Boyd, producer of the series. “Being recognized for the work that we’ve done is very gratifying.”

WNPR received a second place award in the broadcast category for an episode that aired on Where We Live entitled “Coping with Mental Illness.” The hour-long radio show dedicated itself to imparting information about schizophrenia and featured a patient suffering from schizoaffective disorder, a mix of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder that can be difficult to diagnose.

According to Where We Live’s host John Dankosky, schizophrenia affects about 2.4 million people in the United States, which is about one percent of the population.

The official presentation of the awards will be held at the 21st Annual Mental Illness Awareness Legislative Reception on Thursday, March 19, 2009, at 5 p.m. in the Legislative Office Building’s Atrium in Hartford, Connecticut. CPTV will be awarded a plaque and a check for $200 dollars. WNPR will receive a plaque and a check for $100 dollars.
