CPTV Goes Whale Watching With Jean-Michel Cousteau on April 8 at 8 p.m.

Release Date: 03/17/2009

HARTFORD, Conn. – They dwarf the aquatic world they swim through, but whales remain at the whims of careless human activity. While some whale species are surviving, others find their numbers shrinking – and Connecticut Public Television (CPTV, www.cptv.org) is helping viewers discover why. On April 8, beginning at 8 p.m., CPTV is airing a night of cetacean-centered programming, featuring two segments of Jean-Michel Cousteau: Ocean Adventures. CPTV invites viewers to get involved with the safety of their natural community through education and entertainment.

Ocean Adventures’ “Sea Ghosts,” airing at 8 p.m, tells the story of the beluga whale, aptly named from the Russian word for “white ones.” These animals are an evolutionary surprise — a warm-blooded mammal in a numbingly cold sea. In this episode, Jean-Michel Cousteau travels with his team to the high Arctic to determine why some beluga groups are thriving and others are disappearing. The team finds a clear connection between human activity and the beluga’s future. What lies ahead for the beluga could become prophecy for many species everywhere, including humans.

Then, on Ocean Adventures’ “The Gray Whale Obstacle Course” at 9 p.m., Cousteau embarks on a quest to determine why a second species of ocean titan – the gray whale – is disappearing by the thousands. Chasing clues from their birthplace in Baja California, Mexico, to their feeding grounds in the Arctic Circle, the Cousteau team follows gray whales to observe, document and understand the variety of natural and man-made hurdles that these creatures must overcome in order to survive. The amazing expedition unlocks seldom-seen views of tragedy and triumph along a route nearly 12,000 miles long. CPTV takes viewers through this dangerous route, and challenges them to learn more about their own impact on the environment.
