CPTV Celebrates Earth Day with Environmentally Minded Programming Airing April 21 and April 22

Release Date: 04/09/2009

HARTFORD, Conn. – Earth Day falls on Wednesday, April 22 this year, and Connecticut Public Television (CPTV) is celebrating with two days of specials about the environment.

It all starts Tuesday, April 21 at 8 p.m. with Nova: Ocean Animal Emergency. This episode follows the struggles of the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, California. The Center acts as an ER to wildlife patients, including sea lions and seal pups, many of whom are suffering from a mysterious neurological illness. Watch as veterinarians attempt to diagnose the problem while protecting animals from man-made problems like pollution.

Then at 9 p.m. comes Frontline: Poisoned Waters, about the perilous condition of both Puget Sound and Chesapeake Bay. Polluted by industry, agriculture and suburban development, these waterways may have the capability to make millions of people sick. Learn why the Clean Water Act has not been enough to keep America’s waterways clean.

An Independent Lens production, Milking the Rhino, airing at 11 p.m., takes place in the African wilderness and follows the conflict between wildlife and the indigenous people. They once lived in harmony with one another, but modern changes in land use – including the creation of national parks and game reserves – are causing tensions. Tune in to see how animals and humans alike are being forced to change in response to one another.

Jean-Michel Cousteau: Ocean Adventures airs on Wednesday, April 22 at 9 p.m. with the all-new two-part episode Call of the Killer Whale. The episode looks at the orca whale, the world’s most widely distributed marine mammal. Globetrotting explorer and environmentalist Jean-Michel Cousteau and his “X-team” examine how humans and killer whales are both being influenced by the changing environment.

Finally on Wednesday at 11 p.m. comes Planet Forward, a new special that features a panel of experts discussing environmentally minded questions submitted by everyday people. The panel is made up of scientists, business leaders and policymakers, and the program is hosted by Emmy-winning CNN veteran Frank Sesno. The special takes place at George Washington University and is taped in front of a live audience.
