WNPR’s Nancy Eve Cohen Named Environmental Reporter of the Year by Rivers Alliance of Connecticut

Release Date: 12/24/2008

HARTFORD, Conn. – Connecticut Public Broadcasting Network is proud to announce that WNPR/Connecticut Public Radio reporter Nancy Eve Cohen has been named Environmental Reporter of the Year by Rivers Alliance of Connecticut.

Rivers Alliance is a statewide, non-profit coalition of river organizations, individuals and businesses formed to protect and enhance Connecticut’s waters. The Alliance based its decision to honor Ms. Cohen on the work she has performed as the environmental reporter for WNPR and the managing editor of NPR’s Northeast Environmental Hub. This work includes her series on global warming, which was broadcast from Alaska last summer, and her Associated Press Award-winning reportage on sewage overflows in Hartford in 2006. Her more recent projects include a feature examining dam removal in New England.

Rivers Alliance’s Executive Director Margaret Miner has stated, “One reason that Nancy’s stories are so excellent is that behind each feature are many, many hours of travel, study and interviews. With her background in politics and science, she understands all facets of an issue. Also, she’s really fair and really smart.”

Rivers Alliance President and Executive Director of Connecticut Forest and Park Association Eric Hammerling adds, "Nancy has a special talent for finding interesting individual stories that also explain wider issues. And vice-versa. She can take a concept like river continuity and bring it to life with specific illustrations.  We are lucky to have her on WNPR/Connecticut Public Radio."

Ms. Cohen is a graduate of Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. She has acted as editor for NPR’s All Things Considered and Morning Edition, and has performed journalistic work in such countries as Cuba, Sarajevo, Guatemala and Moscow. She was presented with the Environmental Journalist of the Year Award at the Rivers Alliance Annual Meeting on December 18 in Hartford.  Funding for NPR’s Northeast Environment Hub comes from United Technologies Corporation.
