All Things Connecticut on CPTV Explores the Variety and Vitality of the Nutmeg State

HARTFORD, Conn. – Connecticut is more than a state—it’s a vibrant community. With All Things Connecticut, a new weekly series, Connecticut Public Television (CPTV, www.cptv.org) tells the stories that make the Nutmeg State a unique place to live, work and play. From the rugged low-tech joys of orienteering to eco-friendly recycled handbags, from fascinating biographies to stunning video essays, this new series focuses on every strange and wonderful facet of Connecticut life.

Host Diane Smith and a contributing staff of reporters bring fresh talent and homespun stories to the show. All Things Connecticut airs on Thursdays at 8 p.m. beginning April 23, with rebroadcasts on Mondays at 11 p.m. and Wednesdays at 5 p.m.

Each episode will highlight Connecticut’s myriad of delights via five noteworthy segments—Spotlight on the Arts, Inside Out, Treading Lightly, Positively Connecticut™ and Capturing Connecticut.

All Things Connecticut is a CPTV production made possible with support from People’s United Bank and Comcast.

Episode one of All Things Connecticut—premiering on April 23—will feature the theme Something Old Is New Again. Segment highlights include:

 Treading Lightly (Helping viewers go green with a look at our state through viridian-tinted glasses) – The first Treading Lightly segment, The Bag Ladies, will feature two Connecticut women who are creating trendy bags out of used billboards. To date, these entrepreneurs have kept 7,000 pounds of vinyl out of area landfills. The products they create are sold in boutiques all across the country and in Puerto Rico.

• Positively Connecticut™ (Shining the spotlight on people who’ve helped craft our state’s history and on places that provide unique ideas for weekend excursions) – The Positively Connecticut™ segment on April 23 will highlight Modernism. When Philip Johnson’s iconic glass house opened to the public in 2007, it was an immediate sensation. Tickets are still selling out a year in advance. The glass house is the best known of more than 100 modern homes in New Canaan that were designed by Johnson and a group of Harvard-trained architects known as the Harvard Five. The show will explore how New Canaan became a kind of laboratory for an enclave of modernist architects who flocked there in the 1940s and 1950s. And, the segment will focus on the state’s efforts to save the “mid-century moderns.”

• Inside Out (Taking viewers out of their homes and into Connecticut’s natural playground) – The April 23 Inside Out looks at Orienteering, Nutmeg State style. Orienteering began in Scandinavia in the early 1900s as a military training exercise. Today, orienteering clubs exist throughout the United States. All Things Connecticut shows how runners in our state take off for a race against the clock—armed only with maps.

• Spotlight on the Arts (Highlighting local artists, while underscoring the economic vitality and quality of life their work provides for Connecticut) – On April 23, the focus is Puppetry and Object Theater. American theater is experiencing resurgence in puppetry, using experimental styles of performance and large scale spectacle. This segment introduces viewers to some up-and-coming Connecticut theater professionals who combine the old and the new, people and puppetry, to reach new audiences.

• Capturing Connecticut (Inviting viewers to sit back and enjoy the sights and sounds of Connecticut through compelling video essays) – These stunning montages have been compiled by videographers who have spent years traveling across the state, discovering the visual subtleties that make Connecticut so quietly beautiful. The April 23 episode will feature a video essay capturing the work of artist Peter Greenwood. His gallery of hand-blown glass can be found at the historic Union Church in Riverton.
