Another union has filed a petition asking for a vote on unionization for workers at Foxwoods Casino. The latest move comes after dealers at the casino voted to join the United Auto Workers.

The International Union of Operating Engineers is seeking to represent 262 physical plant workers at the Indian owned casino.  The workers include electricians, plumbers and power plant operators.  The union indicated last fall that it was conducting an organizing drive - now it has filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board saying 30 percent or more of workers are in favor of union membership.

The first attempt to organize workers at the casino is still under dispute – table game dealers voted to organize with the UAW last November, but the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe, the owner of Foxwoods, disputes whether the National Labor Relations Board has jurisdiction on its reservation.  The Tribe now says its position hasn’t changed, in relation to this new organizing attempt.  It issued a statement saying it believes the engineers’ petition should have been filed under the Tribal Labor Relations Act.

The Mashantuckets say they will respond to the petition appropriately in a government-to-government relationship with the federal government.  The National Labor Relations Board is due to hold a hearing on the petition in Hartford next week.
