Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman, touted as a possible vice presidential pick for John McCain, is remaining tight-lipped about whether he’d join the ticket.

Lieberman’s name has been among those floated by the McCain campaign in recent days. The independent from Connecticut, formerly a Democrat, was Al Gore’s running mate in 2000. The suggestion he could be on the McCain ticket has caused disquiet among the Republican base, particularly because of Lieberman’s pro-choice credentials. Lieberman himself won’t say what his answer would be.

"This is a decision that John McCain’s going to make on his own and true to himself. I don’t expect that the offer will be extended to me, but I’m going to continue my vow of silence about any hypotheticals."

Lieberman won’t be at the Democratic convention in Denver, instead, he’s slated to speak at the Republican convention next week.

"I’m not going to spend my time attacking Barack Obama. I’m going to explain why I as an independent democrat have decided to cross party lines to support John McCain and hope that in doing so I may convince a lot of independents and democrats, particularly those who are supporters of Senator Hillary Clinton to join me in making John McCain our next president."

Lieberman, who’s just back from a trip to the Republic of Georgia, spoke in New London after addressing the Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut.
