Article Audio
Yale University is convening a meeting Thursday and Friday with governors from states that have taken the lead in reducing greenhouse gases. The governors are expected to call for strong federal action on national climate change policies.
Governor Jodi Rell will be there. Along with California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine and Quebec Premier Jean Charest. Gina McCarthy, Connecticut’s Environmental Commissioner, says states like Connecticut, that have committed to carbon cap and trade programs are eager to partner with Washington
“We want to take the lessons we’ve learned as states and apply them to the federal government because there’s not a lot of time to lose here. So we want a strong federal program out of the block.... rather than a weak program that we then need to massage and work and work. We just don’t have time for that.”
The governors are expected to sign a climate change declaration calling for new federal policies.
