West Hartford Hauntings

The event offers lantern-lit theatrical, nighttime tours of the Town’s North Cemetery. The Noah Webster House & West Hartford Historical Society will stage the event on the nights of October 19, 25, 26, and 27. Tours begin every fifteen minutes from 6-8:45 p.m. (Sunday tours 5-7:45 p.m.).

The program was created in 2005 to offer a different perspective on West Hartford’s past residents, and has been a hit ever since. “We’ve sold out nearly every year- even 2011 when we had to cancel the last night due to snow,” said the program’s Director, Sarah St. Germain.

Each year, different stories of West Hartford’s past come to life. Stories like that of William Brandon, who was killed on the steps of the Congregational Church in 1909. “He got in a fight with his brother-in-law and hit his head on the stone steps,” says St. Germain. She found the story in the Hartford Courant, which followed the case for several days. About conducting research, she says, “There are hundreds of stories in West Hartford’s past- sometimes you have to dig a little to find them, but it’s always worth it!”

The event takes place at the North Cemetery on North Main Street in West Hartford.  Guests will meet a tour guide, also in character, at the gates of the cemetery. The guide will tell their story as they lead the tour by lantern-light.

Tickets for the 2013 West Hartford Hauntings will go on sale in August. Ticket prices are $9 for children 17 and under and $13 for adults. Due to some frightening content, it is suggested that participants be age 10 or over. Tickets are available through the museum at www.NoahWebsterHouse.org or by calling (860) 521-5362 x21. An American Sign Language interpreter will be available for certain tours. Call or email comments@noahwebsterhouse.org for information.
