The ancient solemn Good Friday service of Tenebrae will be held at St. Michael's Cathedral in Springfield at 7:30 pm. This service commemorates the passion and death of Christ. The Cathedral Choir of Boys & Adults will be accompanied by strings from the Springfield Symphony Orchestra and the Community Music School of Springfield. During this observance lights and candles will be gradually extinguished after each cycle of music, readings annd prayers until no light remains. After a moment of silence, the congregation initiates a thunderous stomping of feet symbolizing the earthquake that happened when Christ died. Following the quake and a moment of silence, a single candle returns to signify Christ's light returning to the world. Participants then depart in silence.
