Roses and Fun in Full Bloom for Elizabeth Park Rose Weekend

Free activities for families and children abound during the annual Elizabeth Park Rose Festival June 23-24.  The s.5 acre garden features 15,000 colorful rose bushes designed in an intricate layout of flower beds and climbing roses on arches.  The Friends of Elizabeth Park, which maintains the gardens in association with Hartford City gardeners is hosting the event from 10:00 am to 4:00 p.m. daily.

Many community organizations will provide the music and dance performances and activities for adults and children.  Children will enjoy a scavenger hunt and mask making with The Albano Ballet and can explore several "secret" gardens in the park.  On stage will be the Hartt School of Dance, poetry readings by Friends and Enemies of Wallace Stevens, Americana music by the Heirlooms and guitarist Randy Spaulding.  Highlights on Saturday included a new farmers market featuring locally grown products and on Sunday, viewing of The Connecticut Rose Society Juried RoseShow, with roses for sale

Elizabeth Park is the oldest municipal rose garden in the country and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  The park is owned and maintained by the City of Hartford and is located in both Hartford and West Hartford.  The Friends of Elizabeth Park, clebrating its 35th anniversary, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and maintaining the rose garden and the other gardens in the park.
