Contact: Judi Friedman, 860-693-4813
A unique solar house tour will be held in North Franklin, CT on Saturday, February 25. Sponsored by People’s Action for Clean Energy (PACE), the tour will feature a 1700-square-foot passive solar, super-insulated house currently under construction. The roofs are constructed with high performance structural insulated panels (R-60) and roof eaves are calculated to eliminate solar exposure at noon after June 1.
Tours will be held at 1:00 and 2:00 pm. Visitors will view the house’s four-inch thick lightweight polished concrete floor, to be insulated from the basement below with R-30 blown-in insulation, which will store and reradiate solar energy as needed; French Bieber windows, whose combination of beauty, low U value, high solar heat gain and visual light transmission are unlike anything made in the US; and architectural grade curved beams supporting two roofs that will eventually be covered with vegetation suitable for this climate.
The house has a geothermal heating and cooling system, which will provide heat, air conditioning and domestic hot water, and an energy recovery ventilation system in all the bathrooms for maintaining moisture content and fresh air year round with maximum energy efficiency.
Reservations will be accepted in order of receipt for the February 25 tour, which will be canceled if there is a snowstorm. To order tickets, indicate the choice of time and send $15 per person to PACE/ Donna Grant, 128 Melrose Road, Broad Brook, CT 06016. Checks should contain the ticket holder’s phone number and email address. For ticket information, call 860-623-5487. For tour information, call 860-693-4813.
