| A Daughter's Search for her Father's Racial Approval.
One Drop of Love is a multimedia solo performance and documentary film-in-progress by Fanshen Cox DiGiovanni, a playwright, writer, educator and actor who has appeared in film (Argo), television (The Mentalist, Angel, Days of Our Lives), and theater (The Vagina Monologues, Guys and Dolls).
The show incorporates filmed images, photographs, and animation to tell the story of how the notion of race came to be in the U.S., and how it influences the narrator’s relationship with her father – a journey that takes audiences from the 1700s to the present, to cities all over the U.S. and to West and East Africa, where both father and daughter spent time in search of their ‘racial’ roots.
“Ms. DiGiovanni’s story manages to be deeply personal and universal at the same time — no easy feat. While the story deals with issues of race, it goes so far beyond that and tells a story of love, family and connection that virtually everyone can relate to (my 100% white wife was left in tears). Ms. DiGiovanni has a remarkable gift for inhabiting her characters (her black father, white mother, brother, and grandmother) without ever descending into caricature. And she does so with great charm and humor, engaging the audience throughout.”- Barry Gordon, Actor & Professor at CSULAMs.
Cox GiGiovanni created One Drop of Love to encourage families to discuss race openly and critically. The performance will be followed by a talk-back with the performer.
