Wow, a 40-foot river of cupcakes flowing through Mystic Aquarium—a spectacle you don’t want to miss! It’s the kickoff to our big 40th Anniversary. And while your kids can claim a scrumptious cupcake to decorate on Saturday, hurry back Sunday to cheer local bakeries competing for the best tasting, ocean-themed birthday cake on campus. There’s more! Enjoy special animal training and treat sessions, live entertainment and a bounce house obstacle course all weekend.
Since 1973 the aquarium has lit up the hearts, minds and faces of its visitors. More than 2,000 animals delighted visitors on opening day, October 6, 1973, including dolphins, harbor seals, fish and invertebrates. Beluga whales made their appearance in 1975, followed soon after by Steller sea lions, California sea lions, gray seals and northern fur seals. Mystic Aquarium’s beloved African penguin colony, originally from The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore, was established in 1989, and the Seal Rescue Clinic was built in 1996.
We’ve so much to celebrate—our growing animal collection, our far-reaching education and conservation outreach, and our guests who make it all possible—so please join in the festivities!
